Media and the Trolls

Daily Perspective: April 19th

In a recent Twitter browsing session, I came across Elon Musk's tweets and the thought occurred to me: “What if he bought Twitter just to troll the traditional media?

It's clear that he's a savvy businessman and could make it profitable, but it's also likely that he would use it to troll those who have been trolling him.

This got me thinking about the ongoing battle between old and new ideas and systems. Traditional media has been critical of social media since its inception, and for good reason - attention is what media sells and social media has been capturing more and more of it. Younger generations are increasingly turning away from traditional media and even those who are still consuming it are often doing so in new, digital formats.

Even established media outlets like The New York Times are struggling to compete with social media and newer forms of media like podcasts and influencer content. It's a reminder that ideas and systems are perpetually evolving and adapting to new generations.

From an investment standpoint, it's important to recognize that media is an eternal principle of society - it's how we consume and share information. Media has evolved from the days of storytelling around a campfire to print media to the digital landscape we know today. Staying on top of these changes and being open to new forms of media is key to staying relevant and benefiting from the upside that comes with the new media as it manifests.

The ongoing evolution of media is a reminder to stay open to new ideas and systems, as they have the potential to shape and define our society.
